The Math of Authority Convergence: Contraction Mappings and Fixed Points

Part 2 of the PDKS series. Authority convergence isn't a hope. It's a provable property. Here's the contraction mapping that guarantees it, and what breaks the guarantee.

In Part 1, we established that authority in AI-mediated systems is path-dependent and that stable convergence requires architectural guarantees, not just good content. Now we prove it.

The core mathematical tool is the Banach Fixed-Point Theorem — one of the most powerful results in functional analysis and one that translates directly into a practical guarantee about how authority behaves over time.

The Authority Update Rule

Define the authority score vector A_t as a real-valued vector over your set of canonical substrate objects. Each component represents the accumulated authority of one knowledge object at time t.

The update rule that governs how authority evolves is:

A_{t+1} = αA_t + βF(S, Π, H_t) + ξ_t

Three terms, each with a distinct role.

The first term, αA_t, is the persistence factor. Authority at time t+1 inherits a fraction α of the authority at time t. The parameter α is strictly between 0 and 1. Authority decays without reinforcement, but it doesn’t vanish instantly. This captures the real-world observation that established domains retain ranking inertia even during periods of reduced activity.

The second term, βF(S, Π, H_t), is the reinforcement signal. F is a signal aggregation functional that captures user interactions, citation events, link acquisitions, and other authority-building signals. It depends on the substrate S, the projection operator Π, and the historical trajectory H_t. The parameter β scales how strongly new signals influence authority relative to historical persistence.

The third term, ξ_t, is stochastic noise. Bounded, zero-mean perturbations that capture algorithm updates, competitor actions, and measurement variability. This is the randomness that makes SEO feel unpredictable, and the proof must account for it.

Rewriting as Operator Iteration

Abstract the deterministic part of the update into an operator T:

T(A) = αA + βE[σ | A]

Where E[σ | A] is the expected signal given current authority levels. This expectation captures the feedback loop. Higher authority generates more visibility, which generates more interaction signals, which reinforces authority.

The stochastic update becomes:

A_{t+1} = T(A_t) + ξ_t

And the question is: does the sequence A_t converge to a fixed point A* such that A* = T(A*)?

The Contraction Condition

The Banach Fixed-Point Theorem guarantees convergence when T is a contraction mapping: when applying T brings any two points closer together. Formally, T is a contraction if there exists a constant q < 1 such that for all A, B:

||T(A) - T(B)|| ≤ q||A - B||

For our authority operator, the contraction constant is q = α + βL_F, where L_F is the Lipschitz constant of the signal functional F. The Lipschitz constant measures how sensitively the reinforcement signal responds to changes in authority. If a small change in authority produces a proportionally small change in signal, L_F is small.

The contraction condition is therefore:

α + βL_F < 1

This is the fundamental inequality of authority convergence. It says that the persistence rate plus the feedback sensitivity must sum to less than one. If they do, authority converges geometrically to a unique fixed point regardless of starting conditions.

What the Parameters Mean

The convergence condition α + βL_F < 1 has direct architectural implications.

If α is too high: if the system gives too much weight to historical authority relative to new signals. Convergence slows but still occurs. The system becomes inertial, slow to reward genuine improvement but also slow to punish decline. This characterizes mature, high-authority domains that are hard to unseat.

If β is too high: if the system overweights new signals relative to history. The system becomes volatile. Each new interaction has outsized influence on authority, and the fixed point becomes harder to reach because the feedback loop amplifies noise.

If L_F is too high: if the signal functional is too sensitive to authority levels. The feedback loop becomes self-reinforcing to the point of instability. This is the “rich get richer” dynamic in its pathological form, where small authority differences compound into winner-take-all outcomes.

The sweet spot is when α provides meaningful persistence (authority doesn’t evaporate overnight), β provides meaningful responsiveness (genuinely better content is rewarded), and L_F is bounded by the projection architecture (the feedback loop doesn’t run away).

The Convergence Rate

When the contraction condition holds, the distance between current authority and the fixed point shrinks geometrically:

||A_t - A*|| ≤ q^t ||A_0 - A*||

Where q = α + βL_F. This means the convergence rate is exponential. Authority approaches its stable value at a rate determined by the contraction constant. Smaller q means faster convergence.

For a system with α = 0.7 and βL_F = 0.15, the contraction constant is 0.85. After 10 update periods, the distance to the fixed point has shrunk by a factor of 0.85^10 ≈ 0.20. After 30 periods, it’s 0.85^30 ≈ 0.007. Authority is within 1% of its converged value within about 30 update cycles.

This provides a concrete timeline prediction for SEO recovery or authority building: given estimates of α and βL_F for your domain and niche, you can calculate approximately how many update cycles it takes to reach a given fraction of your authority ceiling. The recovery timeline isn’t arbitrary. It’s determined by the contraction constant.

Handling Noise

The stochastic term ξ_t doesn’t prevent convergence; it prevents exact convergence. In the presence of bounded noise, authority converges not to the exact fixed point A* but to a neighborhood around it. The size of that neighborhood is:

||A_∞ - A*|| ≤ ε_max / (1 - q)

Where ε_max is the maximum noise magnitude. This means the steady-state authority fluctuation is bounded by the noise magnitude divided by the contraction gap (1 - q).

A system with a strong contraction (small q) exhibits small authority fluctuations even under significant noise. A system with a weak contraction (q close to 1) amplifies noise into large authority swings. This is why some domains experience relatively stable rankings while others oscillate wildly. The difference is in the contraction gap, which is an architectural property, not a content property.

The Architectural Implication

The entire convergence analysis points to one practical conclusion: the properties that determine whether authority converges, how fast it converges, and how stable it is at convergence are structural properties of the system architecture. The persistence factor, the feedback sensitivity, and the signal functional’s Lipschitz constant.

You can’t change α (that’s determined by the search/AI platform). You have limited influence over β (that’s partially platform-determined). But you can directly control L_F through your projection architecture. By ensuring that projections don’t overreact to authority signals, that contextual adaptation is bounded, and that the substrate remains stable.

This is why substrate invariance isn’t just a design principle. It’s a convergence condition. When the substrate mutates in response to authority signals, the signal functional loses its Lipschitz bound. L_F becomes unbounded. The contraction condition fails. And authority oscillates instead of converging.
